An example of an existing bottle label. http://www.labeltechinc.com/Portals/104862/images/BPA_label-300x225.jpg < image referenced at this link. |
For the module I must develop and produce a label to be adhered onto a bottle, containing a new brew called 'Chara'.
I also must develop some 'beer clips' to go alongside the bottle, and there are two clips to create.
Below is the official dimensions, taken directly for the Wylam brief.
"Clips:
• The text- 'Wylam', 'Chara', 'Caraway and Rye Pale Ale', the ABV '5.7%'
Font clip: A circle of 82mm with a 1mm bleed (84mm total diameter)
Cask pump clip: A rectangle 130mm x 95mm with a 1mm bleed ( 132mm x 97mm
total size)
400dpi tiff files".
"Bottle:
What must be included on the bottles:
• The text- 'Wylam', 'Chara', 'Caraway and Rye Pale Ale', the ABV '5.7%', 'Store
upright and pour slowly', 'Unfined', 'Unfiltered', 'Contains barley and gluten',
'best before or BBF - see neck', '1.9 units of alcohol', '330ml'
• The image of the recycle logo, the 'e' estimate image.
• A 1 inch by 1/2 inch rectangle where the bar-code will be.
Require label size: 80mm x 178mm with 3mm bleed (86mm x 184mm in total)
300dpi PDF files."
The dimensions of the criteria are very important to take into consideration, because they often can dictate the design of the item.
If an item has quite large dimensions, the design has to be large to match, and if an item has very small dimensions, likewise, the design has to match to this.
Also it is the same with text. Having a large amount of text on a small canvas might make it hard to read, but on a large canvas, it wouldn't be an issue.
Overall all of my products will be relatively small, so I must adapt my designs to match.

I briefly touched on a similar subject in my previous module, non-narrative illustration, where I was choosing between a CD format, and a Vinyl format.
In the end, due to the much larger canvas available to me, I opted to go with developing for vinyl.
More information on the items to be produced, can be found in a separate blog post, as this blog is solely based around the dimensions, and how they can influence my final design.
