The Commercial Briefs

Like I stated in the previous blog, there are a multitude of different briefs to choose from.
In this blog, I will discuss the selection that I have within module 4.

The image above shows the range of different briefs to choose.
Each brief is unique, and a lot of them offer something outside of an academic setting as bonus.
This module will be the most professional module to date, at least for me, as this module will mark a cornerstone for myself as an illustrator, as the module allows me to venture out into the commercial world for the very first time.
A lot of my professional studies research I feel has prepared me for this module, as a lot of the topics covered, highlighted working in the commercial setting.

There are a few briefs that interest me at a glance.
After taking a quick look at each brief, the Wylam Brewery, and the Travelling man are currently the ones that stand out the most to me, whilst a few I don't find appealing, such as the Liberty brief, and the Ernest brief.
I will look at each brief, keeping a very open mind, and picking a shortlist from the selection, to produce in-depth research about, which will allow for me to move onto the next phase of development.

  • Com Arts Brief

This brief is competition based, and requires the submission of one, or a series of illustrations submitted digitally, to match the competition requirements, and orients around a very prestigious communication arts competition, which the deadline for entry is the 9th of January 2015.

It costs £20 to enter as a student, but the prizes are decent, and more importantly, industry recognition will be a result of a successful entry, placing the winner in a very excellent industry position, even before the course ends.
If successful, the winning entries will be distributed worldwide, via digital, and print formats. This is massive exposure, especially for an emerging illustrator struggling to be noticed in the market.

All participants will be judged via a jury of illustrators, designers and directors in industry, which will provide publicity, even if the award is not won.
Communication Art's award of excellence is a very coveted award, so it is worth considering the massive benefits of this brief, if a good enough job is provided.

  • Ernest Brief
This brief is exhibition based, and involves a Newcastle based company that serves as a club/restaurant/social space in the Ouseburn valley.

The company works with illustrators and artists, offering them a location to exhibit work, which will be publicly exposed.
This brief require a minimum of four pieces, and the work should reflect the ethos of the company.
If I were to choose this brief, It would require very extensive research, like my other briefs.

The work must also be priced, and be presented in a manner suitable for a commercial audience, and the company would take a percentage from each sale.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Liberty Brief
This brief is all about developing products for the London based brand, Liberty, which was established in 1875.

It centers around product design, and the end criteria would result in the creation of a series of different products that could be fit for commercial sale.
This brief would require a lot of research into fashion, style, branding, as well as Liberty of London, as a developed product must fit into the shop's ethos, in order for it to be sold.

The products that can be produced as part of the brief, can include such items as home wear, scarves, prints, and textiles etc.

  • Off Life Brief
This is a comic-based brief.
Off Life is very similar in format in my opinion, to that of Nobrow's own in-house zine.

The comic book is like a compilation, featuring work from a range of different illustrators, and containing short comics from each.
It states on the brief that the story must be between one and four pages long, and notably excludes a comic based around such themes as sci-fi, fantasy, and superhero genres.

Apart from the genre exclusions stated above, the brief is very open, and seems like a very compelling brief to me. I like the more open briefs, as I feel the closed briefs just don't seem to allow for as much creative freedom, something that is very important to me.

This is a brief that catches my attention, so I have a feeling I will be producing research on it, as part of my shortlist.

  • One Another Brief

One & Other magazine is a local media brand/creative agency that provides cultural news, digital briefings.
They launched in 2011, and their company ethos is to "re-inject the relevance, intelligence, charm, beauty and purpose into local media".

For their brief as part of the criteria, they are looking for an illustrator to create a series of illustrations based on either the cafe culture in York, or the underground music scene.

This brief requires heavy research into both aspects, and a look into their audience, market, as well as other aspects.

  • Two Puffins and a Penguin
http://pressoffice.penguin.co.uk/static/puffin70th/images/Puffin%20Logos/Current%20logo/Gold_300dpi.jpg < image reference at this link.
This is a very exciting brief that revolves around the creation of at least two book cover designs, based on a minimum of three existing books, using set dimensions to work with.
The books include 'Carrie's War', by Nina Bawden 'Freakonomics' by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner, and finally 'Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit' by Jeanette Winterson.
The first book being a children's fiction book, whilst the latter two books being adult non-fiction, and adult fiction respectively.

The cover designs must reflect the narrative well, and this requires extensive research into each book, and also must be suitable for the commercial/consumer audience, as well as being eye-catching toward potential consumers.

This is a very interesting brief, as it is a huge opportunity to have as an emerging illustrator.
Puffin/penguin is a major player in the publishing industry, so dipping toes into such a project would allow for some level of industry exposure, and winning the competition would provide an amazing boost for an illustrator.

  • Travelling Man
This brief works with a small based comic book store in Newcastle, that is also based in Leeds, York, and Manchester.
For this brief, it requires the development of a suitable zine/comic to be sold in the store.
The criteria of the comic/zine is very open, more so than a lot of the other briefs, as the comic/zine can be about almost anything, ranging from love, to hate, religion to sex.

If I were to choose this brief, I would have "complete creative freedom on the subject and content", however the proposed idea must be discussed with either Ben or Amy.
The message, or themes included in the zine/comic must reflect that of the intended audience.

  • Wylam Brief

This commercial brief revolves around the development of work for a brewery named 'Wylam Brewery', and the criteria is the production and design of a bottle label and 'beer clip', for a newly brewed beer named 'Chara'.

Each item to be developed upon for the product has its own dimensions to work with, and also has content that must be displayed/incorporated within the design, such as the product name, somewhere to place a barcode, and other information.

Now that I have looked at all of the briefs, in an at a glance approach, I will create a shortlist of several briefs that really watch my eyes, and then produce in-depth research about them in order to get a good understanding of them, which will allow me to make a decision on which brief to take.

Shortlist:

  1. Wylam Brewery
  2. Travelling Man
  3. Off Life
  4. Ernest Brief

I will produce research on the briefs featured in my shortlist now.

Thomas.
