What Is Commercial Illustration?

Commercial illustration is referred to when an illustrator/artist produces work for a commercial practise, and gains income from it, through money.
It is basically a 'job', and it is what most of the illustrative world is all about.
When I leave university, its a practise that I will attempt to get into, and it is a large piece of the foundation, in the reasoning behind my study.

A lot of products have designs that have been developed by illustrators, who are 'commissioned' by a company to produce designs for their items.

Commercial illustrators can specialize in such areas as graphic design/illustration, as well as other specialities. Illustrators can create illustrations to be featured in books and magazines, the internet, as well as products.1
A few good examples of illustrative products can be seen below.

A lot of the new briefs centralise around the concept of commercial illustration, and I go into more detail surrounding the brief in the next blogpost to come.
